Betula nigra thrives exceptionally well in the challenging environments of urban settings and serves as a commendable substitute for the Platanus hispanica. While many birch species favour colder climates, the nigra exhibits remarkable heat tolerance, making it particularly suited for areas surrounded by structures that radiate significant heat.

Originating from the swampy regions of the southern United States, the river birch excels in locations susceptible to excessive water saturation and can endure poor soil conditions, including clay.

Its distinctive bark stands out as its most captivating feature, showcasing distinct stages as it matures. In its early stages, the bark shed delicate layers of warm coral pink, which reveals fresh bark underneath. With maturity, these gentle hues transform to richer shades of brown intermingled with burnt amber.

For busy urban environments, our heavy standard tree with a single central leader is an excellent selection. Recognising the charm of its bark, Hillier Trees also grows premium multi-stem varieties, celebrating both its aesthetic appeal and practicality.
