Our native Acer campestre has traditionally found its place in hedgerows and expansive rural landscapes. However, its unpredictable canopy hasn’t always made it a top choice for inner-city urban planting. Recognising the numerous advantages of our native trees, former Hillier Trees director, Hossein Arshadi carried forward Hilliers legacy by pioneering the Streetwise section.
Though the term ‘Streetwise’ was coined only two decades ago, its concept dates back over 40 years. Specifically for Acer campestre, we meticulously selected five distinct Field Maples with pronounced upright branches from our field production. Each year, these specimens underwent propagation, allowing us to closely monitor attributes like exceptional autumn hues, resistance to pests and diseases, as well as desirable canopy shape and growth patterns. After nearly 20 years of rigorous evaluation, Cultivar Number 4 emerged as the standout, earning its title as the Hillier Acer campestre ‘Streetwise’.
Designed with urban environments in focus, this native tree exhibits remarkable resilience, adapting well to regular pruning and maintenance regimes. Its uniform, upright canopy makes it perfect for areas frequented by vehicles and pedestrians, such as carparks, central reservations and pathways. Notably versatile, it thrives in varied soil conditions, showcasing both drought resistance and the ability to withstand waterlogged conditions. Given its native status, it remains a cherished habitat tree for local fauna, including bees and butterflies.
