Acer davidii, commonly known as Pere David’s maple or Snakebark maple, is a deciduous tree. Originally discovered by French priest Armand David, a missionary in Central China, the Acer davidii is one of the most striking ornamental trees.
The Snakebark maple is known for its unique and eye-catching bark, which exhibits a beautiful snakelike pattern. The bark starts off with a greenish-grey colour, gradually maturing into shades of white, cream and olive green. As the tree ages, the bark becomes more pronounced and visually appealing, adding interest to any landscape.
In early spring, Snakebark maple produces inconspicuous yellow-green flowers that are arranged in clusters, creating a delicate and subtle charm. Male and female flowers on the tree will give way to winged fruits, which are distinctive features of maple trees.
Acer davidii thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade, although it can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. It is relatively low-maintenance, making it a popular choice for parks and urban landscapes. It has a compact root system so avoid hard surfaces.
Whether used as a standalone tree or incorporated into a larger landscape design, Acer davidii adds a touch of elegance and natural beauty wherever it grows. Its distinctive bark, vibrant autumn colours and overall hardiness make it a desirable choice garden designers and landscapers alike.
