Commonly known as the Prunifolia Hawthorne, the Crataegus permisilis ‘Prunifolia’ is a deciduous tree which is highly appreciated for its ornamental value. Native to North America, it is widely grown in gardens, parks and urban landscapes. A great tree either as a standalone or as hedging.
The foliage is a notable feature. Leaves are oval shaped with serrated edges, and become a shiny dark green in summer. These transform into fiery shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn. Another notable feature is the abundance of white clustered flowers in spring. These are fragrant, around 1 inch in diameter and provide a stunning display that attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies. Following the flowers, the Prunifolia hawthorn develops small, persistent orange-red fruits. These fruits, known as haws, are not typically consumed by humans but are a valuable source for birds and other wildlife.
Prunifolia Hawthorne is generally resistant to many pests and diseases, which make it a relatively low maintenance tree. With its attractive flowers, colourful foliage and wildlife-friendly fruits, Crataeus permisilis ‘Prunifolia’ adds charm and interest to any landscape and provides all year-round beauty and ecological benefits.
